Compared to the base year of 2016, the coal price index peaked in July 2022 at about 563 points. In other words, 5.6 times more coal was being sold globally in that month than it was in 2016. Natural gas, fertilizer, and crude oil prices also saw considerable increases. After Russia invaded Ukraine at the end of February 2022, the price of these items increased.
